Children Digital Photography
Planning is essential. Children digital photography needs some planning, especially with newborns. Be patient and plan some extra time so you don’t have the pressure because of tight schedule. Sometimes you need more time just to deal with the mood of the child. Hopefully you can get the best pictures at the beginning of the session. Most of the time it happens at the end as the child needs a moment to get used to the environment.
If you take children portrait for a living than you need to plan some room to get the correct shots. This would mean 5 minutes or several hours. Don’t put yourself in the pressure of a second assignment too close in your schedule. Have time to discuss with the parents and interact with the child is a key to children photography success. If you are shooting offsite plan your photo session ahead and get the right gears to do the job.

Show confidence. You need to be confident. When you are taking photos of a child your main subject doesn’t know what’s going on. If the parents are two new parents, they wouldn’t have a clue about children photography either. It is you who need to be in control of the situation. On the other hand if you’re photographing your own child then you just need to worry about how to keep the little one focused and that’s not always an easy job.
Communication. When it comes to photography of children you will need a lot of patience and your communication skills will be at test. Communication is essential, with the parents of the child, when it comes to know the child or simply when it is just not possible to take photographs just yet: child crying, distracted or just doesn’t want to stay still. You can use some toys to attract the child’s attention during the photo session. The toys can be blinking lights, soft toys with sound, a clown nose for yourself, some pet toys, etc.
If you are parents you’ll know what to do when you want to get their attention and you probably already have the props handy around the house.
Lighting. As for portrait photography, the best light for children photography is still the ambient light. Unlike studio light set up, you’ll have to deal with the available light. It’s not that hard when you get the trick.
In studio, you can control the light and determine what type of light source you want, in the direction you want. You won’t have the same controls with ambient light but you still can get the most out of it. In the studio you’ll control your lights, out of the studio you can “control” your subjects.
Locate the source of the ambient light and bring your subject to the light. Position your subject to have the direction of the light that you are looking for. This is of course simple to say and do with adults but not easy to achieve with children. You can simply position yourself in a way to put your subject in the lighting you’re looking for. Just remember the bigger the light source is the better. Lights through windows are my favorite ones.
