Make your buyers’ life easy. Before taking or submitting your photos to a stock site you’ll have in mind how easily the buyers of your photos can use them. As mentioned before, your photos will be used in Powpoint presentations, brochures, publications, magazines, etc.

The designer at the client site will download your photos and use them in her document. There are mainly two aspects to consider:

1. Can the photo be put directly in a document without any editing? If your response is yes then your photo has more chance to be downloaded. This applies to photos of a group of people for instance.
2. If the subject of your photo is an object, let’s say a hamburger, has the background been removed so that the photo can be easily used by the designer? Imagine if you have taken the hamburger in front of a cluttered background it will be difficult or time consuming for the designer to remove it as she only wants the audience to be focused on the main subject. Think about the person that will use your photos. They are communication people not specialists in editing photos with Photoshop. You need to make their life easy.

Marketing. To successfully sell photography online you’ll need to have a process in place whereby you can easily produce targeted photos in quantity. I’ll call that process Marketing.

Technical considerations:

• To increase the chance of your photos being downloaded you’ll need to produce high quality photos. Three megapixel digital camera is the minimum
• Take your photos with the highest resolution of your digital camera. The higher resolution the better
• Don’t use digital zoom, use only optical zoom. Digital zoom will add noise to your photos and reduces its quality
• Don’t use flash, use only natural light. Flash can create harsh shadows and your photos might not be accepted
• Use a tripod to avoid camera shake. Crispy sharp photos are more downloaded
• Use a plain background so that your subject stands out from it. Plain background is also easier to remove in editing software
• If you edit your photo make sure to save it in a lossless format like .PSD (Photoshop) during editing process. Once your photo is final save it as a JPEG photo as Microstock sites prefer JPEG format (istockphoto.com won’t allow you to upload .PSD files)

Some legal aspects:

• If your photos contains people that can be recognized don’t forget to get them to sign a model release form. It’s easier than one might think. Just ask them and most of the time they will accept. If you take photos of material thing then you don’t have to deal with model releases
• Your photos should not contain trademark or copyrighted logos. If you take photos of a couple in a Starbucks café make sure you blurry out any Starbucks logos

Usage considerations:

• When you upload your photo, make sure to use relevant keywords so your photo can be found by prospective buyers
• Think about how your photo can be used from a communication perspective. Ask yourself the question “In which type of communication can it be used”. As a helper refer to magazines you read, ads you see in the newspaper, on ad panels, etc.
• You can also go to Shutterstock.com and look at the list of categories there and see in which categories your photo best fits. That will give good indication about your photo (i.e. your product) and your target.

More and more Powerpoint presentations have a lot of photos in them to better convey messages to the audience. Once there type in a term in the search box. Let’s say you’re interested in photos of cooking, just type in the word ‘cook’ without the quotes in the search box and click on Search. You’ll notice a Sort dropdown on the top right of the screen, select ‘Downloads’.

The results you’ll get from your search term ‘cook’ is about 48206 matches as of this writing (July 2009). They are sorted by the number of downloads. The most downloaded photo shows a barbeque in the foreground and two ladies smiling in a blurry background. This photo has had more than 3200 downloads.

On the results page you’ll also see various photos related to ‘cook’ that have been downloaded a lot. From these results you’ll know what photos are selling in the area of cooking. You can also refine to target a ‘niche’ within cooking area. You can try to type in the term ‘cheese’ in the search box. The results will show you photos of food that have cheese in them.

Repeat this process of area or niche research in the domains that interest you and see if they sell. If they sell you can invest time into taking photos and submitting them if the domain you’re interested in is not selling you just need to choose one or two that sell.

Setting this up on your own will take time, because you’ll have to spend money on the domain, hosting, and marketing to get traffic, though this will turn into a very profitable method for you with the more traffic you get, and the more photos you upload.

Take photographs for eBay and similar auction sites. Many people will pay freelance photographers to take photos of their items for auction. These photos will pay you once, rather than residuals, but it’s a great way to build up a portfolio and reputation with clients. Several other websites are looking for photographers, and you may even find magazines to take pictures for.

Take photos of properties for real estate companies. Contact your local real estate companies and offer to take pictures of their properties for listings. You will negotiate your rates. This may not be a frequent assignment, but could help fill in holes in your work schedule.

Build stock photo libraries and sell them online. Graphic designers and web designers will become your best friends. Some of them would rather purchase large libraries of photos than pay for the rights to individual photos as needed. Gather a large collection of themed photos and sell them to graphic designers and web designers.

Use Microstock photos to make money. Similar to the method above, you can upload your photos online and earn money each time a web designer or graphic designer downloads them and purchases the rights to use them for a particular purpose. This is a good way to make your pictures work for you a long time after you took them.

Use an online store such as CafePress. Put your photos on several different products and market your store. This way your photography gets out there, and you’re still making money on the products you sell. These products can sell over and over, and you don’t have to spend any money to have them printed or keep any stock in your living room.
