How To Take Good Portraits
If you didn’t think you could take good portraits with a digital camera, you’re wrong. Read this to find out more about how to take good portraits with your digital camera.
You don’t need any high tech camera or professional photographer to take portraits. Here are some tips to help you learn to take nice portraits with your digital camera.
Change your perspective. Don’t always take photos head on. Don’t be afraid to get above the object, or below it. The perspective used in a photo often makes it great.
Eye Contact. As with the perspective, objects don’t always have to be looking directly into the camera to get a good portrait. Have them focus on another object in the frame, look off to the side, or whatever you think will look best. Play around and take more than one shot to see what turns out the best.

Break the rules. Forget everything you know about the rules of composition. Put the subject in the center of the photo. Don’t be afraid to experiment here either, and take several shots to see what turns out best.
Play with lighting. Lighting is another factor that makes or breaks a good picture. Experiment with different lighting while adjusting your angles and perspectives to see what kinds of pictures you can come up with. It’s a great way to add the “wow” factor most people are looking for in their photos.
Push the comfort zone. Every subject has a comfort zone. Work with them to push them out of it. These kinds of photos often turn out great, despite the fact that the subject may not believe they will. The possibilities are nearly endless when the subject is out of his or her comfort zone.
Make the shots candid. Candid shots, those taken when the subject is unaware, are the ones that usually turn out the best. Take photos when the person doesn’t realize the camera is in the room, because when people are aware of the camera, they suddenly become aware and self conscious about every single fiber of their being and where it should be. This technique works well with children.
Use props. Bring objects into the photos and have fun with them. This is an excellent way to take pictures of children, and gives the photos more focal points. It also provides a theme of sorts to the picture and brings it to life.
Use closeup shots of one body part. Photos that pay attention to one body part in particular, such as the eye, are great portraits. These give the “wow” factor by leaving a portion of the photo to the imagination and giving a mysterious air to the photo.
Obscure a portion of the subject. Use different zooms so that part of the subject is not in the frame. This will allow you to dictate where the focus should be, and similar to the technique above, leaves a bit of mystery and room for the imagination to roam.
With these tips to take great portraits, you should be well on your way to taking fantastic portraits. The most important part is that you and your object have a fun and relaxed time because the pressure to get a good shot will likely ruin it.
