Photographer’s Market: Photographer’s Market is an invaluable tool to freelance photographers. This book could easily be called the bible of freelancers. It is over 600 pages, and lists a variety of different freelance photography opportunities. The book is updated yearly so you’ll need to buy a new copy each year, but for a low price it’s defiantly worth it.

If you’re not in a larger city, you may want to consider talking to local newspapers and smaller publications to see if they need any photography work done. Keeping a list of contacts to talk to periodically will help you generate a stable client base.

This is actually one of the great jobs for photography. Well established professional wedding photographers hire assistant photographer to assist them as a second photographer. Working in pair allows them to take more photos and cover every angle of the wedding. Some photographers will provide you with the camera, lenses, flash and memory cards. He gave me the booking details and I directly met with the couple to discuss how they wanted their photos to be taken.

I shot as an assistant photographer for three different well established photographers in my city. As a result they could book more weddings and I had more opportunities to shoot and improve my skills. Now I have my own clientele but I continue to shoot as assistant photographer when the need arises.
