Wedding Digital Photography – Tips For The Amateur Photographer

So your best friend has asked you to be the official photographer at his wedding. The task of taking wedding digital photography for your friend is serious. Follow the tips below and you’ll pile the chances to succeed in this mission. These tips will help you produce great photos of the bride and groom most memorable day.

Preparation is essential. Have several batteries fully recharged. Take the charger with you if you go on a long session so you can recharge them on the spot as well. Bring with you multiple memory cards that you have previously emptied. Make sure you have enough cards to cover the entire session. If you think you might be short of memory, bring a device like a laptop with a memory card reader so you can transfer the memory card to the laptop to free up the card.

Have the scenario in mind. Check out the wedding venues, times and be there early. Locate places where you can take photos from during the ceremony. Discuss with the bride and groom before the day about the shots they’d like to have and make sure you can circulate to take those shots during the proceedings. It’s important you know in advance how things are going to happen so you can place yourself on the right spot for the shots. Important moments include arrival of the bride, the speech, ring exchange vows to name a few. Check in advance for locations where you can take photos of groups and posed portraits.

Know your gear. If you are going to take photos with a brand new camera you’ve just bought. Make the extra effort to know it inside out before the day. Practice with it by taking photos in similar situations and check out the output. On the day you won’t have many chances to take a second shot. Make sure you have the right settings of your camera so you capture the best shots the first time. A valuable option you’ll want to explore is having an assistant photographer with you. That person can help organize group photos, take shots from other angles so you have complete cover of the ceremony.

Turn off the shutter sound of your digital camera. This noise not only can distract people you are taking photos of but also become annoying for guests attending the party. You will also want to take candid photos of friends and family members so be discreet as much as you can.

Take plenty of photos. The big advantage of digital camera is you can take a lot of photos without having to pay a fortune to get them developed. Be ready to shoot the perfect moments as they won’t happen many times. So don’t refrain from taking photos you feel will be the ones to be kept. Don’t delete the photos you take too quickly. Once the session is over take the time to evaluate the shots. Thanks to retouch software you might end up keeping the ones you initially though not worth. In the post processing stage you can correct a lot of parameters like contrast, brightness, saturation, etc. Cropping will also allow you to reframe the photo and discard what you don’t want to be in the scene.

Continuous shooting mode. If your camera has this feature whereby you can take several photos in one second then use it. This feature will reveal valuable when you take photo of a large group. You’ll notice that on the first shot there will be some closed eyes. The second or third shots have better chance of having everybody’s eyes open and smile.

Being the official photographer for a wedding is a stressful job. Be prepared, know your gear, concentrate and your photographs will become part of the bride and groom treasured memories.
